This September, the Chatham Area Public Library will host a presentation traces the life of Mollie Weinstein Schaffer, a romantic, yet frightful, glimpse into the life of a woman in uniform during World War II. The presentation, “THE JOURNEY TO MOLLIE’S WAR: WACS AND WWII” will take place on September 23, 2020 6:30pm via Zoom. To register for the Zoom link, please go to https://www.chathamlib.org/events/virtual-journey-mollies-war-wacs-and-…; Cyndee Schaffer draws on her mother’s letters written home during the war tracing the footsteps of women who served in Europe, following Mollie and her fellow WACs who were stationed in London, England before D-Day and during the post D-Day German buzz bomb attacks.
The event will be co-produced by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. The current edition of the Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, presented in cooperation with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, consists of presentations exploring Illinois history and culture in recognition of the state’s 200th anniversary.
Cyndee Schaffer collaborated with her 91-year-old mother to write a book based on the letters that her mother sent home to her family while serving as a WAC (Women’s Army Corps) in Europe during World War II. Schaffer is editor of the Midwest Writers Association’s monthly newsletter.
