To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, the Chatham Area Public Library will host Illinois Road Scholar Jeanne Schultz Angel for a free virtual presentation on the historic suffrage movement in Illinois this October.

The presentation, “Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois” will take place on October 21, 2020 6:30pm via Zoom. To register for the Zoom link, please go to https://www.chathamlib.org/upcoming-events. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in our local, state, and federal elections. Jeanne Schultz Angel will explain the paths walked by female leaders in our state. She will show how the diverse group of activists fought against sexism and racism and for the right to vote.

The event will be co-produced by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. The current edition of the Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, presented in cooperation with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, consists of presentations exploring Illinois history and culture in recognition of the state’s 200th anniversary.

The program will be led by Jeanne Schultz Angel who received a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in history at Illinois State University. In late 2006, she became the Executive Director of the Lombard Historical Society. She also served as the Executive Director of the Illinois Association of Museums. Today she is the Director of Learning Experiences and Historical Research at Naper Settlement.

“Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage in Illinois” will take place Wednesday, October 21, 2020 6:30 pm via Zoom.  The event is free and open to all audiences. To register for the Zoom link, please go to the Chatham Area Public Library’s Events page. Space is limited, registration is required.
